Studio Visit & Craft Workshop from Nan Hua School, Singapore
November 9, 2024
We had the pleasure of welcoming over 30 students and teachers from Nanhua School, Singapore, to a fun and educational 3-hour workshop at Folkcharm Studio. The event focused on exploring sustainable fashion, traditional weaving, and natural dyeing techniques. Participants also had the chance to experience the charm of handwoven fabrics crafted through the local community's traditional practices.
Discover the Story of Folkcharm
We began by sharing the story behind Folkcharm, a brand committed to creating meaningful handwoven fabrics in partnership with local communities in Loei province, Thailand. This session was designed to help students understand the process and importance of building creative and sustainable collaborations with our communities.
After the presentation, the students asked thoughtful and engaging questions. They were curious about topics such as our inspiration, pricing decisions, marketing strategies, how Thai consumers view eco-friendly products, and our plans for the future. The discussion was both insightful and inspiring for everyone involved.
Weaving with Mini Looms
After nearly an hour of discussion, the students had the chance to try weaving using small handlooms. With guidance and support from our friends at 141Crafts, they learned the basic steps of weaving and gained an appreciation for the dedication required to create each piece of handwoven fabric. Everyone was enthusiastic, focused, and proud of their own creations, making the experience both educational and enjoyable.
Natural Dyeing
Another hands-on activity everyone enjoyed was indigo dyeing. The session was filled with fun and a bit of mess as participants dipped, rinsed, and designed their fabrics with patterns of their choice. With close guidance and demonstrations from our team member, P’Kaew, everyone learned about the process and had a great time expressing their creativity.
An Experience Filled with Fun and Learning
Throughout the activity, everyone participated enthusiastically, both in listening to the presentations and engaging in the various activities. Everyone was focused and enjoyed the learning process, leaving with new experiences to take home, whether it was knowledge about sustainable fashion, weaving, natural dyeing, or the creative works they made with their own hands.
